1|helton family #1: tuning: “i never did play that one right”

mr. helton takes bruce green (collector) through all of the old keys on the banjo. background noise, family conversation––especially nice. 1977.

throughout the collection, there is a recorded modesty present in the musicians, where they claim to not remember a piece, or are unable to perform it correctly––but after these initial statements, their artistry comes through. like it needs to be gently teased out of them. i do not know if this is particular to making recordings, or if it is an aspect of the musician’s culture, or if it is just human nature. regardless, it is fascinating to listen to, to hear an amazing performance followed by, “i never did play that one right.” it is like good cooks, sitting down to eat an amazing meal they just made, and apologizing because it is not quite right, not exactly as they thought it might be––but we don’t care, we want to keep coming back for more…..
