“i know it was the blood”––so many things at once: singing, talking, background, coughing––all joyful.
 
from my own notes: “after dinner i took a long walk in the surrounding fields to clear my head. instead it became more active, meditating on new action, thought for tomorrow. the evening sun fought through clouds, and it was the first glimpse of heat and summer and no breathing....

“at the apartment i read novels that take place here: james still (he used to stay in these very apartments when visiting berea), lee smith, wendell berry, and i am overwhelmed. one thing bleeds into another. appalachian inundation. i can’t imagine what i will dream of tonight.”
