18|addie graham: my husband is in the army
“my husband is in the army, and i hope he return”
the tape skips and warble is built-in. this is what makes these archives so wonderful––the music is not polished and cleaned up to be put on a mantle; it is still alive, replete with "mistakes" and humanness.
on tuesday of my first week in berea, i listened to addie graham, 94, singing with bronchitis into a microphone into a reel-to-reel into a cassette into my headphones and ears thirty years later. on saturday––by complete chance––I meet her great granddaughter, amelia: a link, a physical presence that was ungraspable in my perfectly detached world of recordings, libraries, headphone listening.
